EMDR is a form of Psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro in 1988. It involves treatment by directing focusing on the distressing memory. It is intended to adjust the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating problematic symptoms. It is not a talking therapy in the traditional sense and aims to avoid re-triggering trauma. It is recommended by the NICE guidelines and is backed by evidence based research. It is is used in the military, emergency services and those experiencing trauma in life events.
